St Modwen: planning a virtual town centre for Longbridge

In 2016, 4 Roads ran a workshop with St Modwen to plan an online community for Longbridge, Birmingham, and designed a proof of concept around its artists.

The brief

Who would an online community for Longbridge serve?

In 2016, St Modwen asked 4 Roads whether an online community could help Longbridge, in Birmingham. A requirements workshop set out who would use one, and which of them to start with, for a proof of concept that could show its value quickly.

  • Client: St Modwen
  • Place: Longbridge, Birmingham
  • When: 2016
  • Platform: Telligent

Who it is for

Twelve kinds of community member.

Tourists, retailers, commuters, people coming to events, hotel guests, electric car drivers, local businesses, over-55s, expectant mothers, artists, residents and college students: each with reasons of their own to take part, and needs of their own from the space.

The proof of concept

Start with the artists.

The proof of concept put the artists first, expecting their involvement to draw in the other groups. It was to run on the free edition of Telligent, to keep the first costs down, with 4 Roads managing the community to get it going.

The proof of concept ran, and St Modwen later closed the community down.

  • Events without a go-between: artists organise events directly with retailers, without St Modwen in the middle
  • A virtual town centre: a reason to visit Longbridge, spread by word of mouth

Measuring it

What success would look like.

4 Roads recommended four measures for the proof of concept.

  • At least three pieces of content from members a day
  • More town-centre events, with no more of St Modwen's time
  • Footfall at key events, such as the Lightshow, up year on year
  • Participation benchmarked against Facebook, aiming for more than 1,700 likes
