House of Hackney: an ideas wall and a counter that puts its wallpaper on the wall, true to scale

For House of Hackney's flagship, 4 Roads built a SocialStack touch screen: visitors mix its paints and wallpapers, projected on the wall true to scale.

It's always been important to us that we help bridge the imagination gap, allowing people to dream and helping make those dreams a reality. This new chapter and our move to St Michael's felt it was the right time to craft a piece of technology that brought our collections to life.

The brief

A flagship in a Victorian clergy house.

House of Hackney is a cult interiors brand, founded in 2011 by Frieda Gormley and Javvy Royle. In 2022 it moved its flagship store to St Michael's in Shoreditch, an 1856 four-storey clergy house, and made it an immersive shop of concept rooms, where everything you see is for sale.

Among the patterned furniture and the rooms to walk through, it wanted a piece of technology that brought its collections to life.

What we did

Ideas from home, matched in the store, and seen on the wall.

4 Roads built the touch-screen interface, on SocialStack, supplied the hardware, and set up the counter and the projector.

The ideas wall let people put in their ideas, in the store or at home; when they came into the store, an assistant helped them match wallpapers to those ideas. At the touch screen in the counter, visitors mixed and matched the brand's new paint shades, launched on 5 April 2022, with its classic wallpapers, and the projector put their creation on the wall, to see it true to scale.

It is how House of Hackney helps, in Javvy Royle's words, bridge the imagination gap.
