When we first setup our store we called it one thing.  Subsequently we have renamed it. Is that to be advised?  Can we map the old name to the new?

We ask as Google has indexed our store with the original name and now those links return 404's

This is an interesting question and applies to things like blogs as well, google will update over time however if you wanted to ensure a smooth transition then I would add some extra entries to the site urls config file that would redirect from the old URL's.  I would have to do some experimentation myself but I pretty sure that you could just use a pattern that matched anything with old name in and redirected appropriately.

Good idea.  In fact maybe a permanent re-direct in IIS would work
